I posted a message last week regarding generator/regulator problems. I got that squared away when I found the points in the regulator welded together.

NOW, I tested the generator using John T.'s bench test. When I unhooked the field ground, the generator turned at the same speed as it did before.

I assume it needs a rebuild???
 
When she spinned good n smooth n even with voltage on ARM and case with FLD grounded that says the armature and brushes and bushings are at least decent shape, but if she didnt speed up some when you ungrounded the Field Id suspect a Field winding problem. It may be simple like a short to case or a break open there where the 2 splice in the middle or a problem at the FLD post pass through, I have seen them overtightened and broke or shorted out. Another problem may be one is shorted to case frame or theres an open in one of them??? If she has some miles on her a rebuild may consist of a new set of brushes, commutator turned down and mica undercut, field winding problem repaired. Id inspect and ohm out the fields, look for shorts to case or an open circuit (especially where they splice in the middle), before I gave up on her just yet..................

Thanks for your help. However, since I have no experience with this type of repair, and don't understand 1/2 of what you were talking about, I think I'll take it in to the Auto Electric shop and let them deal with it.
