worthiness of a JD 2010 ?

On a 60"s yr. JD 2010 Gas- What is the reliability of these tractors?
I was told some models of JD"s series 1010,1020 or 2010,2020 were not very reliable, had serious engine, trans, hyd, or other problems and to stay away from these models. I can"t remember which the old farmer told me. There"s one 4 sale near me, and I"d hate to buy a money pig. Can anyone give me some advice on the 2010"s ?

In their day a 2010 was known as John Deere's lemon but I know many got several years of use.
The diesel engines were converted gas engines. The pto lever put the pto in gear and enguaged the clutch almost simultaneously. If someone pushed the lever w/o the engine running it would shear a pin because the gears were not lined up. I think those were the worse things about them. Also many did not realize they had hydraulic filters since they traded 2 cyls in.

I think that you would be much better off with a 2020 or 1020. The 2010 had lots of problems and parts are getting harder and more expensive to find. The engine used a sleeve deck instead of individual sleeves and no one makes that aftermarket. The basic 2020 design was unchanged up into the 55 series. If you want to go newer a 2440 was a good tractor that is almost the same as the 2020.

1010/2010 brakes were not very good when they were brand new and got worse with age. Their hyd's left a lot to be desired, Diesel engines were a lot worse that the gasoline engines. Get a 2010 D with a Prestolite starter and you were in TROUBLE.

Yeah that brake design was used by everyone and was not good on anyone's. When they got glazed they were really useless.
The air brakes on a banty rooster were much more effecient.

The gas engine models were not as problem -prone as the diesel with the sleeve/deck set up. The main issues were poor brakes which are not easly repaired , also make sure it shifts OK as shifter linkages can wear, and keep in mind its about 50 year old so alot has to do with condition/care its had up to now. I ran a gas 2010 as a loader tractor for several years and the lack of good brakes was the main issue. The previous/orig owner showed me paperwork from the JD dealer where they had tried to fix the brakes several times while he had it and they never held up.

(quoted from post at 10:06:21 07/01/13) The gas engine models were not as problem -prone as the diesel with the sleeve/deck set up. .

Gasoline has the same type deck with sleeves as the diesel engines. Gasoline cylinder heads weren't as prone to cracking as the diesels.

I've had a 2010 gas 3010d a Ford 960 and a Ford 4000. They are all 50+ year old tractors. The parts for the 2010 do not appear to me to be that much more expensive than the 3010. There are plenty available in salvage yards for used parts. If in good condition and not abused it will not be any better or worse than any other 50 year old piece of equipment.

With that said what do you want to do with it? It books at 39hp to the ground and has smaller hyd system than others of the era.

Thanks Farmer Zeb, and to all that have replied ! The 2010 in question, says a fresh overhall, lots of new parts, and new paint. It definitely looks and sounds good. I have a small farm and just need a decient newer tractor than I have. I have always liked that style of JD, it's relatively close by and a decient price.

freshly overhauled can mean a lot of things. I would ask for some documentation on what has been done to fully understand the history of the tractor. As the others have mentioned it is a sleeve deck design if an actual overhaul has been done there should be a receipt for a 1500-2000 dollar sleeve deck from a JD dealer.

txjim,

that is less than the last time I checked... in fact I think that AT15762 is for the diesel and that AT15761 add 669.51 is for the gas. Am I reading jdparts.com correctly???

ralph,

if you want feel free to shoot me an email. I just finished a refurbishment of my 2010. I'd be happy to answer any other questions about them.

hi, you mentioned that the jd 2010"s have a hyd filter. where is it? i have a 1962 2010 (gas)at present i"m dealing with leak that appears to be coming from hyd pump.

Filter is located on RH under foot rest. Clean filter(screen) with a solvent such as brake cleaner

You can write all the "good" points of a 2010 on the back of a match book cover and still have room for a large add......
