what happened to this 420 block?

I bought this 420w at an auction. The cracks are around the bottom 2 bolts that connect the block to the bell housing. The cracks aren't in a water jacket. Someone tried fixing them but didn't do a very good job. It runs pretty well but does leak a little oil out of the one crack. I think i'll have my local welding man see what he can do. Just been pondering what happened. Maybe some loader abuse, or the front end came down hard at one time?

Friend of mine has a 430W that was broken in half at the center tube(behind your break area)when the braces for the JD loader were not installed. The tube was replaced but the SN plate was not transferred (Grrrrr). I knew the mechanic that replaced the tube and I believe there was a service bulletin about it way back in the day.

I've seen several like that, had a 320 that was the same way.JD used very poor cast iron. The front ends with wide fronts broke the same way.
