Shifting all the time hard on powershift?

4440 with 8 speed powershift, when I round bale I run 7th, just before it starts to net wrap I downshift to 6th, wrap the bale, kick it out, start moving, then up-shift to 7th.
My question is, is shifting all the time like that hard on the transmission?

Personnally, I think shifting through all the ranges once in a while is preferable. The old addage " use it or lose it" applies in auto trans and valve bodies such as these use. That being said , go ahead and do what you need to do as it just removes a minute amount of clutch material each time , so you just make sure and allow for that on the frequency of oil and filter changes in the trans/axle.

(quoted from post at 10:59:00 06/29/13) You must have a good baler and pickup to cruise along in 7th gear. Anyone else hear bale that fast?

Yes, its a very good baler. Bought it new just a few years ago. It's a JD 458 mega wide pick up, silage special, hydraulic pickup, with net wrap. It will bale anything.

I agree the powershifts are near indestructible. Back when I sold new 4020 PS they were called the "wetback" proof trans. I'd sure like to see you rd baling in 7th gear down here in this gopher/fire ant infested fields. You'd need to get an air seat and fasten your seat belt.

We have a 567 and bale in B 4 with a 4440 mega wide pickup also the tractor is as wide as it will go on the axles and if it don't get caught going under the tractor the baler will pick it up.

If the field is rough I slow way down, only the nice and smooth fields I run 7th. One small hay field I have to run 5th because of the roughness. I will not beat up the tractor or baler trying to run too fast.

I was telling some friends about this baling in 7th. We came to the conclusion fertilizer might slow it down.
