What do you fellas think of this deal? 4630 for $10,900

Hey fellas,

I found this one for sale in western Iowa. It's a 330 mile trip to go look at it, then I'd have to hire someone to haul it home.

Seats junk and will need to be totally replaced with one with the fold down armrests. Front rubber is getting down there. Surely a repaint. I'm not a huge fan of the 8 speed powershift, but it'll be easy for my wife to run and they're supposed to be indestructible (and you have to junk the tractor if they go out due to cost of repair).

Unknown hours, 1974 model, dual hydraulics, 18.4-38 rear rubber @ 50% (will get swapped with the 95% rubber on the 4430), axle mount duals on 9 bolt hubs (so are the duals on the 4430), complete 3 point, Air is 134 and it works, $10,900.

Good replacement for my 4430 QR open station?

Yes it's definitely had a paint job as the big decal on the front didn't come from the factory. It doesn't look bad for the $$$$. Back in the days when I was selling NEW 4020's powershift trans had a nick name of being illegal alien(wetback) proof. There's a 4850 MFWD on DFW CL for $5000 but it must be a scam

Actually it is not as good of a deal as your thinking,,although I like the 4630"s they have a lot of draw backs,,the 8spd power shift can cost that much alone to repair when needed, they have a bad low end power range, but very strong after you get the fire built, the 1,000 RPM "only" PTO is a short fall too, the cab interior/seat will cost up near $750 plus labor,,tires?? trucking?/I would keep looking

I would take a knowledgeable person with you to
look the tractor over. check the drawbar hole,
three point arm balls, clutch pedal for wear.
ask for any repair records, wearing a seat out is
more than 7000 hours. My father bought one brand
new in 1972 for 14000 bucks, it was a power shift
and it was a great tractor. like others have said
you have to keep the throttle up over 1500 when
using them . but that tractor is far better than
a 4430 QR. Your wife will luv ya for it with that
transmission, its so easy to manuver. My wife
will only drive the powershifts, espesially with
a loader or the grain buggy. And to get a cab
with air conditioning, well there is more cancer
showing up all the time from sitting out in the
sun. Maybe you can talk the guy into sharing the
trucking cost. I would make the switch instantly.
What do you buy for 10000 bucks now adays. not
even a 4020. good luck

Hey,

The 1000 only PTO doesn't bother me much. The only thing this tractor would do that requires a 540 shaft is run a 375 bushel Knight 716 slinger manure spreader. The slinger was 1000 PTO optional, and I put an ad on CL looking for a junk spreader to rob the parts off to make it 1000. It's unlikely I'll find them, but I have an adapter here and I'll just keep the tractor under 1500 rpms while spreading. Otherwise, the rest of the work here is drawbar or 3 point. Frankly 1000 only PTO is an advantage because they cost less than 4430s, bringing them closer to what I can afford. Any [b:9e1bdf3733][u:9e1bdf3733]good[/u:9e1bdf3733][/b:9e1bdf3733] 4430 worth owning around here is still $15,000 or better. The 4430 on the sale last week was shook (had to ether start it on an 80 degree day, no door, no rear window, rust holes through the floor, junk fenders) and it still brought $6500

Are the seat assemblies really $750? I was gonna try to find a used one. I can install it myself. I just went completely through the seat assembly on my 4430. It kinda sucks to do, but it isn't a difficult job and hard to screw it up...

Any good way to tell if the powershift is on its way out during a ride and drive? Should I make him let me hook to a chisel plow and go work some ground, or is there a better way?[/u]

backing off the aneroid (spelling?) on my 4630 sure fixed the low end power problem. starts and lugs much better now. I now just idle along with it when drilling seed, or running something small like a V-rake. and getting 2.5-3 gph while doing it.

And it's still running strong while powering a pto tub grinder with the injection pump turned up one turn... might be making near 200 hp.... sure been a good tractor for us.

You will love the cab for your little boy to ride with you. My 2 year
old will ride all day long in the 4640 cab and loves it! There is
plenty of room for him to sit beside me or stand at the door and
look out. A tractor cab with his dad is a great place for a boy to
grow up. The world needs more dads spending time with their boys.
Good luck

I might be wrong but it seemed like the air
cleaner placement makes it newer than a 1974.So
many variables on 40 year old tractors. If it is
mechanically sound it should give several years of
service.If not several $s plus headaches.The cab
will make a comfortable safe place for your
son.The duals are worth around 4/5$ and if JD
factory wedge hubs more.Powershifts are fine until
you have to fix one.It would not have came with
high back seat in 1974.Paint and interior[minus
seat] look good.A poor seat and worn tires can
make a good tractor look worn out.About what it is
worth.
