JD sickle mower #5

I have a JD sickle mower #5 that the ball bearing keeps jumping out of the pitman drive. Does anyone have any idea why it keeps jumping out?

Are you speaking of a bearing in the drive case or the ball that the outer end of the pitman hooks to on the end of the sickle?

Are you referring to the end of the pitman that connects with the knife head on the sickle knife?

Take a look at the diagram below of the regular cutter bar.

Check the "ball" on the knife head (Key 15) for excessive wear and replace the knife head if necessary.

Take a look at the diagram below of the sickle pitman.

The rear strap (Key 1) and front strap (Key 15) are held in place by tension on the latch fork (Key 17) by the spring (Key 16).

Check the spring tension and replace the spring if necessary.

Hope this helps.

If you are talking about the ball on the end of knife blade that conects to the pitman rod.
The most obvious reason is, its worn, you could be getting the sickle bar jammed; you might be trying to mow with the bar in too steep of angle.
It designed for a saftey measure so as not break something else when it jumps off.

How far from MO are you? My dad has one that is taking up space in his barn that he is wanting to get rid of. It is complete and working when parked there 20 years ago. He was talking about hauling it off for scrap since he needs the space. If you are interested in all or part email me at [email protected]
