JD 950 hydraulics

fordman4

New User
I recently bought a used JD 950 for general work around my property. Previously the tractor had only been used with a loader and backhoe, i.e. never using the three point function. I found the needed 3-point hardware to set up for my attachments, including a brush hog and box blade. When I connected the blade (or the hog for that matter) the three point rides up and I have to lower it repeatedly. In fact I have to constantly (and often unsuccessfully) hold it down with the quadrant control handle. What gives? Is an adjustment called for or is something amiss.

I also have a Ford 2N for the same attachments. I noticed the JD hydraulics have a "stop valve" on the rockshaft structure. The Ford does not have this. What is its function?

The 950 is a lot more tractor than the 2n--I guess that"s not surprising after 50 years. The 2n is still fun to tinker with, though.

The tractor is in generally good condition, but I"d like to find a hood and grill for it in good condition. Anybody got a line on these?

Thanks for any information.

Ken

If I read this right your lever is just drifting up ?

If so there should be a simple adjustment on the lever shaft. Look for some friction disks and a castle nut ?

Do you have an owners manual ? There should also be adjustments on the lift linkage as to how high it lifts for free play of the arms. These adjustments are in the 750 owners manuals I have and should be similar.

Thanks, Mike. But no, the handle stays in place. I did tighten it just to make sure. The position of the three point itself seems very (that is, overly) sensitive to the handle position, resulting in the blade rising to max height or dropping over a very small range of movement of the control handle.

I'm running a box blade and have to micro-manage the control handle to keep the blade at the proper position. Very exasperating.

Without the aid of a 950 tech manual I'd suggest to check the linkage on the feedback rod parts keys #33-44

Thanks, TX. Those feedback parts are all in place and appear to be working. The manual says very little about the adjustment of the feedback linkage though. Since the tractor was used for years only as a loader/backhoe, I wonder if the rockshaft/three-point sat idle and therefore developed a problem.

As you see, my "name" is Fordman4. Maybe thats the problem. Could be I'm still on the learning curve as far as using my "new" JD and box blade.

Nobody has said anything about the Stop valve knob (which won't turn, by the way). What is its
function?

Thanks again.

It's been many yrs since I've been close to a 950 but I think the stop knob is the same thing as a rate of drop screw and when fully closed will stop 3 pt from lowering .

I have had an 850 for 15 years, good tractor. But good luck finding a good hood and grill, for some reason it is really rate to see them in good shape.
On my 850 there is also a small rod that sticks out on the side, and it has a small pin in the end to make a little L shaped lever. I think it is on the left side, right under the seat. This is the slow return adjustment. It can be rotated about a quarter turn to adjust the rate of drop on the lift arms. Suggest you try that to see if it helps your problem.

Fordman, I have a PDF of the tech manual you're welcome to.Shoot me your email if you want it

Once up will it stay up when shut off ? Maybe some packings are leaking ? If it stays up then
could also be a problem with how the loader & backhoe were plumbed in and then once removed if the hoses were connected properly. Sometimes they need rehooked up differently ? All depends on the model and how it was rigged up. Some careful service manual reading and tests may be on order. I'd start with how it is plumbed up.

Hello Joe, I tried to send a PM, but that wasn't enabled. Maybe because I am a new member here.

Could I get a copy of the tech manual? An owner's manual would be nice too !
