What Deere had for a 24V system was a little confusing and unlike other 24V systems. It was actually two 12V systems. One positive ground battery (LH) one negative ground battery (RH). It was a positive ground system. The little fused wire was to split the systems. Some lights worked off one battery while others worked off the other balancing the batteries. That fusable wire was originally just a plain small guage wire called a fusable link. Was designed to burn in two when a short occurred. They finally decided a fuse would be easier to replace.
Since the radio is negative ground you use the RH battery like grn wrncher says.
Maybe this was more info than you wanted? The long way around the barn.

You being a new member probably missed reading the previous heated discussions where it was stated that JD's 24 V system is not two 12 V systems combined with "No ground" required for head lamps. You need to read the archives of this forum. John T I think I hear your phone ringing!!!!!! :wink:

Who won that heated discussion?
You have an ignition switch with a positive post and a negative post, a light switch with a positive and a negative post.
Now do you believe the lights are 24V bulbs. No they are 12V. The inner ones run off of one battery while the outer ones are off the other battery. The same way with the 12V idiot lights. As stated above the oil light and fuel guage won't work without the ground wire connected. The head lights don't work properly either. If the generator was a true 24V generator it would need only two posts. It has three since it charges two separate 12V systems. A true 24V starter would have only one post just as a 6V or a 12V starter. A true 24V system would require resistors to operate 12V lights. There are none except the one on the light switch for dimming one set of headlights.
I guess I won't be calling John T. Maybe that ringing is only in your ears :)

WHOA!!!!!!!! John T or I need no explanation of JD's 24 volt systems. I spent too many years in a JD dealers service dept explaining to technicians about the 24 V systems. Just research the archives for some interesting reading and you will understand my previous statement.
FYI the statement I made about John T's phone ringing was intended as sort of a joke to him.
