5325 Steering Wheel

The Steering Wheel on these tractors are adjustable. You can move it forward to ease mounting and dismounting, and adjust position. Mine has quit locking in place. The online parts shows only the entire steering column as a replacement. Has anyone taken one of these apart to repair the position lock? What is in that little cylinder that locks it?

What is your serial #? I looked at the PC for the older serial number and the gas-filled strut is available separately for about $150.00, at least for those. (Key # 11.) Is that what you mean by "have to buy the whole column?

It appears to me that parts key #6 is what locks steering column in place. On other JD tractor model it's described as a kit which leads me to believe #6 is the problem

#6 operates a valve BUILT INTO the gas strut that releases the strut internally to allow adjustment. You could toss the pedal away and it will remain locked.

I repaired a (similar) 6400 that was oily around the strut and wouldn"t lock, it subbed to an updated strut, as does this one.

Mine is slightly different. They want to sell everything from #23 up, as a unit. Thanks for the Part number, that may help.

Boy I'm glad I own a 4255 with a mechanical latch on tilt steering that with over 10,600 hrs is still working the same as it did the day it rolled off the assembly line.
