What's the best aftermarket cab for a 4010? (Blah)

Hey all,

I was planting corn this spring and my 4 year old boy REALLLLLLLLYY wants to ride with me on the tractor. I have a 60, a 4010, and an open station 4430. half a 2040. (I also have my grandpa's 3020, but that will never be disfigured by a cab.) I let him ride on my lap for a short round, but it is hard to keep hold of him and do what needs to be done on the tractor.

I have spent several hours in those miserable, loud, uncomfortable, hot boxes when working for a neighbor. However, I simply can't afford to trade in or buy another tractor right now. One that was particularly loud was a Hiniker on a turboed piped 4020. The other was particularly uncomfortable was a Year-A-Round on a 3020 loader tractor. I liked the look of the Hiniker better and figure most of the loud came from the piped 4020 screaming full throttle while plowing and chopping. My 4010 is my "light" tractor that does everything but the heavy work. It spends a lot of time on a front mount cultivator. That should cure (or at least lessen) the "loud" part, but it won't solve the "hot" part. The 3020 is a very recent addition and it may spend a lot of time on the cultivator instead. I just think the 4010 is the best candidate for the cab.

Would I hate the Hiniker as much as I think I would? Is there a better make and model that I should be looking for? I'd sure like to let my boy ride along safely...

Hinikers are lound, but I suppose you could get by with one. I have one on my 4520 and it is coming off! No ROPS, lound, and hot. I am replacing it with a soundguard this summer/fall after I get back from my internship. As I said, I have not done it yet so I can't say how hard it is etc (JdBert is the guy to talk to on that). Search for "soundguard cab" on here and you will see several topics on this (if you are interested). It would be easier to get a 30 or 40 series, but if you love your 20 series (like me) it might be right for you.

There are NO aftermarket cabs that will accomplish your desires. The HOT part can be remedied with the addition of air conditioning, but no one ever got a handle on the NOISY part until they started building the cab as a seperate "body", which could then be more or less "isolated" from the rest of the tractor. It might be possible to install a factory Sound-Gard cab from a 4230-4430 etc., but it probably will not be a straight-forward project.

For what it's worth, my dad bought a brand new 4010 when I was about 10 years old. I spent hours and hours setting on top of that left rear fender, hanging onto the hand grip hole. A cab was an extravagance we just couldn't afford.

Yep, that's my opinion, too. I had looked into putting a soundgard cab on my 4430, but the shadetree shop quoted me $5000 to $8000 to do that. So I'd take my $10,000 4430 and make it into a $12,000 4430, but I'd have a soundgard cab... Still can't afford it.

Any suggestions on a safe way to keep a 4 year old on an open station tractor? He just looks so crushed everytime I tell him no - which is often. He really wants to ride. I was thinking about ways to attach a car seat that wouldn't be aggravating. There's just not much room anywhere when the fenders are moved in for 30 inch rows.

You say you have a 4430. Getting a refurbished SG cab that will
mate right up seems a no brainer. Outfits such as Abilene Machine
have them ready to go.

4430 open station won't have the holes in the rear axle housings for the rear SGB mounts. But strap mounts can be built as I had a customer years ago that had a 4430 OS with a SGB installed with cold AC.

I'm gonna call another local guy and see how much he dings for a SG cab on a 4430. Any chance I'd ruin a "rare" and "collectible" tractor by taking a factory OS 4430 QR and making it a cab tractor?

Our son rides with my dad in a 4230 with a 4post canopy it's
closed in well and has a place for him to sit.. When I was a kid
we had a 4020 with a cab all the windows were out and it was
just like a 4 post canopy but also had a place to sit and
enclosed the cockpit I had a lot of hours sleeping on it.. Good
luck. I have some pictures somewhere if u would like to c them

rrf, I put a seat with a seatbelt from an old bean buggy/bar and mounted it to the top of the fender. Kept my 3-year old in place for 6 years on a Farmall M. For 7 years now I have had my own 4010d with a year-round cab. We don't get in it without hearing protection. That being said, there was no rollover protection for either of us. I honestly would put a sg cab on that 4430. Then the ROPS is built in.

I hate to say this... but there is NO way to keep
a 4 year old safe on an open tractor.

A previous minister at our church lost his little
brother when he fell off the open tractor and was
run over by the disk. It happens. And will
again.

I have 3 boys of my own... and its hard. I do
take them on the sound gard cab tractors, and
probably shouldn't do that.

Don't mean to pop the bubble... but you could
probably buy a new tractor with a buddy seat for
less than the accident cost.

Please be careful.
