Dual spacing

What"s everyones opinion on a good spacing for duals-close? apart? I have 2 tractors-one weighs about 13,000 with duals about 3" apart, carries great. Other weighs about 24,000 with duals 13" apart-doesn"t carry very well. Maybe a lot because of the weight or would it do somewhat better if duals were closer? Your opinions?

Wide spacing is for straddling rows, no good reason otherwise.
Won't you have the same footprint per tire no matter the spacing? 11,000# is almost the weight of the first tractor. What about larger tires or triples?

Axle or clamp on? Axle we like a little wider so mud can fall back out but clamp on are close. Our 4020 has clamp-ons that are wide to straddle corn...

Most times I have been told to use a 4" minimum clearance on dual wheels. This is especially important with radial tires to allow them to flex and not touch. It also allows mud clearance. Spacing won't have much impact on load carrying capacity. Footprint is what does that. I like to run my duals wider for the clearance. If you run duals too close in mud you will end up with a mess that balls up easily. And it won't float you any better. Mike

Do you have rocks? I've seen a rock wedged so tight between duals the dual had to be taken off to remove it. The closer they are together, the better the chance of sticking a rock between them. Mud clearance is another issue to be addressed. If you don't have to worry about rocks or mud, keep them fairly close but not so close they touch at the bottom. The closer together they are the less they will churn the ground when you turn short and you won't have to use the brakes as hard to help it turn. Jim

11000#s would make quite a bit of difference.Usually if not doing row work 8in + will work fine to keep mud out.We have ran triples and they work fine just a little wide for transport.Almost all new tractors come ready to strattle 30in rows in our part of country.
