40 throttle shaft spring

I broke the spring end of the spring that is at the end of the long throttle shaft just below the hood where it hooks to the rod that goes to the governor. How important is this spring? Can I try to match it at the hardware? There is another spring at the governor and I was wondering if they have to be matched. Your imput is appreciated. Thanks...Fred

Both springs are the same and I woulden't try to substitute a hardware store spring. New from Deere ( M1853T )is $35. They do show up on ebay regularly.

Thanks for answering my question, my son wanted to put a substitute spring on there but my gut feeling feeling was it should be matched. Thanks for the part no. Ouch on the $35.00. I'll check E bay and around. Thanks again....Fred
