Yours will most likely have the old style valve, they are ornery to get out and will need a set up tool to calibrate it,and some one familiar with it. I have a way of bench testing them here,,But I'm in Central Ohio.

Tim so you think its in the steering motor and not down at the steering piston? I should just rebuild both and be done with it.. I know my luck, do one and the other will need repair soon after..

Well if it's chattering at the dash I'm thinking you have some thing going on there, and worn o-rings in the valve will also cause it to "wander" on the road..

JD started metering valve steering on a 4230 at SN 008840 so a 1973 could be either type steering.
Serial Number List for JD: Model 4230

Then your tractor will have the old style steering valve that must be adjusted.
