fuel tank sender wires 4020

Got a look at the new poly tank and the sending unit area. The wire that is connected to the center of the send unit is orange. There is another wire running in the same harness that is brown and is a bit short to make it to the send unit with a male spade connector on it. Any chance that yellow wire is a ground? Possibly a remnant of this 68 being converted from 24 to 12 volt? Be easy to connect to that yellow for ground rather than auger a new hole. Can do it but...someone had replaced the fuel line with rubber hose at some point and punched a hole in the very bottom right of the side screen to route the hose. ie can"t completely remove screen as hose passes through it. And 2..I have the loader mounted back on so drilling in there will be a tricky prospect.

Not a groung. Just run a wire from one of the sending unit screws to the anything metal. It"ll be grounded then

Darn...was hoping it was a ground. Like I said getting in there to drill a hole or run in a self tapper somewhere is sketchy. So my curiosity is getting me...whats the yellow wire for?

You don't need to drill a new hole. Just use any one of the existing bolts in the area such as radiator brace, frame plate bolt, etc.

Cliff,

Think I could use the tank strap bolt? Solder small circle connector to one end for sender screw and then 8 inches of wire with larger circle connector soldered to other end. Put one nut on strap bolt, slip on wire connector and then tighten down another nut to sandwich it on that bolt.

That might be sketchy with a poly tank. There is a clamp on the steering pipes above the hood line (between the H and N on the nameplate). This was used as a ground point on the console models. Just be sure the clamp is tight on the radiator rod.
