JD 60 Starter

Are you rebuilding it? Bench test it by putting it tightly in a vice. Clamp the black jumper cable to the starters housing and touch the red to the brass stud on the starter under the top button switch to see if it will spin. If you need it rebuilt let me know. Your starter # is 1108950 and I've rebuilt many.

For pointers and tips, watch your fingers, not much room and its heavy, also make sure you have at least one cable off the battery.

As below, it is heavy, but nothing that can't be handled by a reasonably fit NFL linebacker (just kidding). I'm well over 60 and have had mine in and out a couple of times - again, yes heavy, But , the trick is to have the area clean before removal and clean completely after - it is tight in there. Leave the bat. cable on (hard to remove when installed) and 'winkle' the thing down at the chassis end - slowly. Installation is the reverse. Getting the drive end into the housing is a bit of a PITA. Patience helps. HTH & good luck!

I have all the right sized tools at arms length. Lay on my back and use my knees to help guide the starter down its heavy. If you do a search on my handle I have a post from back in 2005 that I have every tool and size plus steps called out for the job. It was very detailed but I've forgotten it all since then without looking. I had to take mine out 3 times. Once when it broke and 2 more times because the rebuild place had something wrong. I became an expert at removing them-unforunatly
