Do you have a manual to show proper assembly and adjustment? It's quite involved to explain on here but just improper adjustment could cause what you are experiencing and just adjusting the nuts where they were before won't get it. Don't get me wrong , there very well might be something worn out but we need a starting point as to where to direct you.

B-maniac: Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have a John Deere parts catalog, as well as an I&T manual for this tractor, and I followed the assembly and disassembly process carefully. I realize the adjusting nuts will not be in the same place as before, since the clutch disks are new. I used my torque wrench to tighten the three nuts all equally (not very tightly), just so the clutch would engage. It does engage, as I mentioned, but it does not feel right. The best description I have is "mushy". Would worn dogs possibly cause this?

It may take some running for things to wear in & mate up again. It is only hitting the high spots now.

Tighten each nut a turn and give it a try. It's a simple clutch. If tightening the nuts does not help, then look at the dogs - compare them to new/rebuilt ones.
