B leaking gas from pulley.

Hi,First time on green forum. Got a B at an auction.Figured out rather quickly that there is a valve under each cylinder, some sort of compression release or ????? When i started it gas would spray out. Shut valves and she runs like a top.

My dillema is, when I engage belt pulley, gas comes out of pulley output shaft and also from cover around flywheel on left. I am stunned as how this could be unless gas spraying from open valves filled some housing or something. I appreciate any help. Thanks!!

Most likely the float in the carb has stuck, the needle stayed open and it filled the cylinders and crankcase with gas. Dont try and run it until you flush the system. It can and will ignite.

Ok Thanks. But having red tractors all my life, i am wondering how on earth it filled the crankcase at the pulley? Is that a common housing with shared oil? On my IH M the pulley runs off the top of trans and has no continuity to the crankcase.

The quater inch valves are compression relief valves. They should be closed while running. If they are on the bottom it is a newer B and probably has a little higher compression and the 6 volt starter has a hard time turning it over.

Thanks. But how does the gas fill up the housing that drives the pulley? I get that the float stuck, but how does it make it to that housing??

I'm not certain on B's, but on A's of that vintage, the cover the pulley is on - called the reduction gear cover- shares oil with the crankcase.

An operators manual will show you how to flush everything. As the above post stated, sounds like you have a stuck needle valve in the carb.

Thanks so much. I will start the hunt for a manual, big swap meet this weekend close by, hopefully I will find something.

Remember, the B was wade from 1935-52, and there were a lot of changes. Look for a book that matches your tractor. Your area of concern, the reduction gear cover and lube, was one area that changed- or at least did on A's.

On the side of the block theres a oil level pet cock open it up to see if the crank case is over filled with gas or if you have ran it the oil will be real thin. If it filled with gas I bet there will be a bunch drain out. The petcock lets you know when the oil level is full at the correct level. If its full of gas do as others has stated by flushing out the system.Good luck on your JD.

It's not so much a stuck needle valve in the carb, but the fact that someone left the gas on overnight. I know of no needle, and no carb that can stop a tankful of gas from getting into the engine when the gas is left on, while these same needles and carbs run just fine as long as the gas is shut off while the engine is off.

NOT really a problem, just shut off the gas and the problem goes away - and it happens to everybody at least once.

You have a crank case full if gas.DO NOT RUN THIS ENGINE. Drain the oil, let it drip out over night and replace oil and filter. The situation you have happens when the gas shutoff is left on when not using the tractor. The gas runs past needle and seat, into the cylinders and then into the crank case. The first thing do when shutting down an old A or B or any tractor of that vintage, TURN FUEL SHUTTOFF.... OFF so it can't happen again. Can be dangerous. Hope this will help you out.

The fuel in the case got as high as the crank and filled reduction cover. The input shaft is level with the centerline of the crank so if the level was high enough to come out on the pulley and flywheel sides its a pretty safe bet that some fuel may have made it into your tranny as well. Probably not much but I'd check it.

I cannot thank you all enough. I know to shut the gas off when engine off, do it on my IH's all the time. First green tractor I have ever owned!

The gas came out when I was loading it up on the trailer. I figure the auctioneers didnt shut gas off or whatever. Let it sit overnight and got over 2 1/2 gal of crappy black gas out of oil level petcock. Will drain entire crankcase overnight. THANKS!!!

If your tractor is an all fuel model you could probably drain the case, add another gallon or two of gasoline, and pour the black nasty mix back into the big fuel tank. :D
