jd 4000 rockshaft control issue

On my 4000 I noticed the depth control lever would not move from the "D" position. Didn't think much of it and put it on a 3-point implement this week and it acted like it was set in "L". The control lever would have to be pulled way back and then all of a sudden there would be lift. Moving the lever forward to a point would result in sudden drop. Investigating I found that the load control lever on the rockshaft valve will not move at all. Is it possible that somebody's had the rockshaft control valve off and there is a cam, roller or lever inside in the wrong position? I have all the JD manuals and have studied them but have not had a control valve off yet so I'm just wondering what I'm looking for. Any ideas? Thank you.

They get stuck in the housing,,they rust a bit in the very outer part of where the shaft goes into the bore,,"Don"t" force it much the lever breaks easy and a bear to replace...spray your favorite penetrating fluid on it and tap it gently

If you want to manually control the 3 pt then "D" is where the lever needs to be. Sounds to me as if L/D needs to be adjusted as outlined in the JD tech manual. One thing to check is operating valve clearances which is set by adjusting screw(parts key #2). This adjustment is outlined in tech manual and can be performed with housing on tractor. Also be sure the big nut(parts key# 15 or 24) is tight as they can loosen causing control problems

Thanks Jim & Tim. After tapping and spraying with Liquid Wrench the load control shaft will still only move a little and feels jammed in the "D" position. And you would think that if it's in the "D" position the rockshaft would work accordingly but it doesn't. From what I can read and see any adjustment will still not allow the arm to move. The bolts look like someone's had the valve off before. What do you think, - pull the rockshaft control valve and have a look?

If you kinda feel it hitting on some thing that's the next step, lift it off an look it over, there is a step-by-step sequence to re-adjust the hitch that will most likely need done...when your ready to do it I will try to post it for you...

OK Tim. In preparation for removing the rockshaft control valve and with the rods removed I note that the selector lever on the control valve will now move out of the "D" position if the control lever is moved beyond the "Low" position, - that is further rearward than the rod as adjusted would have allowed when assembled. In other words to allow the selector lever to move when the control rod is attached you'd have to extend the control rod at the clevis and move the operator's control lever to complete down. Somehow I don't think this is how it's supposed to work. Seems on my other tractors that the selector can be moved with the height control lever in any position. Does this tell you something? Thanks.

Yes the L/D control lever should have the capability of being moved no matter where the 3 pt control lever is setting. If it were my tractor I would perform the L/D adjustment as outlined in JD tech manual before R&R of control valve.

I"m with Jim ,,you may even get by changing the linkage in through the bung hole,I do this with a 9/16" socket welded to an extension... give me a call 740-743-1085

Maybe the answer. I pulled the rockshaft control valve housing off and it looks like the cam follower was out of place. Seems from my measurements that if this is the case the load control linkage will be limited by the rockshaft cam and that the load control lever will only move if the rockshaft lever is moved beyond its low adjustment. I have to get ahold of the gasket and o-rings before I can get it back together. After that I'll let you know how I made out. The bolts were mismatched so I know somebody's been in there before. Thanks for your ideas.
