430 steering

I have a 430 that will start to shimmy when on the road.Tie rods are all fine there is some slop in the steering box. Is there a shim for the box or should I find another one? Any help Thanks

My slant steer 420 was doing this last year and I replaced the tie rod ends, lever shaft studs, universal joint and bushings. Drives great now.

If your tie rod ends are good, I would next look at the lever shaft studs, they are often worn out. This excess steering slack and high speed wobble is a pretty common issue with this model tractor.

Very common situation with the 430 tractors. I'm assuming you don't have power steering. This is probably a series of wore connection that have multiplied the probelm . First is the steering wheel tight on the shaft, just behind the dash is a universal joint , this u-joint is connected to the steering shaft with a splined coupler ,the shaft is connected to the worm gear with a keyed coupler, the worm gear turns the vertical shaft with two pins that ride on the worm gear. If all the connection are good and tight it is most likely the two pins that ride on the worm are wore out. These can be purchased at most after market co. for $25 ea , Deere wants about $60 per pin. I hope this helps. Tom

I have had similar problems with my 430. One time it was the arm on the top of the spindle was loose, might want to check that. I have also tightened down a little on the adjustment bolt on top of the steering box, if it gets too tight it will be hard steering. Also check that the steering box is not loose on top of the pedestal. One bolt is tapered so be careful to not tighten so much that it breaks the ear. Again don't ask how I know that can happen.

Jack the front end off the ground and work your tires back and forth, you'll find your slop.
