looking at a nice 4240 , quad range , cab w/ ac. approx. 7100 or os hours. looks , runs and drives nice but i was visiting with my local deere dealer and he is no fan of 4240's i got the feeling he was telling me to keep looking. any opinions on these tractors?? it would be used for ahying and some crop work

We have been pretty happy with ours- the 40 series have many nice features that make them comfortable to run (hydracushioned seat, soundgard cab, good hydraulics and drivetrain) yet they are not overly complicated with circuit boards like the later models. Forgive me if I come across as a smart aleck, but I would talk to another dealer before passing on a good 40 series tractor. Just my two cents,
Lon

When my cousin bought a new one he claimed that was the big seller at the time.
He retired years ago, and talks about selling the 4240, but I don't think he ever will. It is a very nice tractor.

Some of the earlier ones had a camshaft-driven oil pump; that was updated to a crankshaft-driven one later on. I have also heard some had issues early on with the camshaft wearing prematurely. It all comes down to what you intend to do with it- for example a 4440 can do quite a bit more, and the ones larger than the 42s in that series have turbos and inline injection pumps- our 42 has the rotary pump. But they are handy machines. I was wrong to comment about finding another dealer- he likely knows your needs better than me.
Good luck,
Lon

Nothing wrong with a 4240. The camshaft problem was a minor production improvement, but most models of most brands have had small production changes. The 4240 is significantly heavier-built than the 4230 and should be a fine tractor, if it has had proper care and maintenance.

I had one quite a few years ago, good tractor. If mostly haying and light field work should be fine. I did not like it as much as a 44 due to no turbo. Made big difference. That being said I mostly planted with the 42 and it was great for that. Good luck.

I bought a used one in the 90s- has 8xxx hours on now, first engine (almost no oil usage) and rear end. PS was replaced a few years ago due to a lining release issue. Some say they are a bit cold starting. (mine is). 44 with turbo is nice, obviously has more power. Used mine on 8 row 7000, field chopper, discbine, baler, plow, etc. No regrets buying it.

We have a 4240... owned since 1990. It is a reliable horse, and ours has 17000 hrs on it. The engine and trans were rebuilt at around 14500 hrs by an employee we had who was attending JD Tech school.

When we rebuilt the engine, we added a 444o head and turbo, but kept the original injection pump. This woke her up a little, with no negative side effects yet.

It has been very dependable, the only negative I would have is they are thirsty.

Basically same as 4440 just non turbod that makes it a little less efficient and 25H.P. less. They sell for about the same and are just a little noisier{non turbo]Lots of them have been turbod with good results but it does hurt their resale some.I usually take them off as you can sell the turbo easily by itself but some people dont want anything that is not stock.

Ours is our main workhorse. A bit thirsty, maybe, but not overly so. It's easy to work on, and has been pretty trouble free, although I had an issue with the high-low range pack a few years back, but for a thirty year old tractor, it's not a complaint. It's used almost every day from spring through late fall, and has been pretty much bulletproof.

the 4240 is a good tractor.we farmed with 4440's.I liked the quadrage better.we still have that one, it has 9000hrs we replaced the clutch and 2 speed but it also had 190 hp.I have worked on some 42's with over 10000 hrs that have never had any major troubles I think with less power they don't wear things out as fast.as far as the jd dealer tell him that 42 will still be around long after these new tractors are headed back to china for scrap.

6900 hrs on ours, no big problems, just re painted, all new cab interior and updated to soft cowl like the 55 series. Best looking JD in the county!!!

If you dealer ain t selling it to you of course he s going to hate it. If he was selling you a 4240 it would be the best tractor ever built.
