John Deere 4255 Delco radio

Well, the delco radio quit working in the 4255. John Deere says they are no longer avaliable. I had done some research and they did use them in some of the older cars and such. Is my best bet to find another used radio out of one of these cars? The bad thing is I don"t know how long that one will last, let alone if it even works at all. John Deere recommended putting another radio in. Has anyone on here put an aftermarket radio in? Which is the best brand? I would like to utilize the adapter harnesses from deere because I don"t really like to splice the wires, but will if need be. Any input is appreciated. It will be a long and boring planting season without a radio lol. Thanks

If you can identify which car also has that radio, there are easy to use adapters that can plug into the harness and wire in aftermarket radios. Crutchfield is a good place to start. If you can look at the back of the radio and talk to one of their techs, I am sure they can fix you up with a harness and a faceplate that snaps right into the hole.

You can install any of the DIN mount radios in the tractor but you will need to either buy the mounting bezel or modify the original to fit. 30 and 40 series you can buy the bezel for less than $15 but the 50 and 55 series is different and higher price. DIN mount is pretty standard with automotive radios. You will have to splice the wires unless you pay big $ for a radio from Deere. I usually get whatever is on sale at Wmart and have had no problems with them.

you are in luck now...

the radio is pricy. But look in the product info and it lists a harness and a bezel for 55 series tractors. Typed the number in the search bar on the top of the page and they came up. The harness is $27 bucks and the bezel is $15 bucks. You can buy those and pick up a pioneer or jvc or other radio at walmart for $75 bucks and be done. The harness is a plug and a bunch of colored wires. They usually have tags that say what each wire is. You just match them up to the same named wire on the radio and crimp them or solder them. Then unplug the old radio and plug the new one into the tractor wiring harness at the back of the radio and slide the new radio into the hole. May have to put the bezel on the radio then install it as one unit. Almost any kid that has installed a radio in a car can do this. Pretty easy..

What to do, depends upon how much time and energy you want to spend. If you are patient and willing to to practically start from scratch, it can probably be done with any in dash stereo. If you are not patient, and don't want to be stripping wires and doing all this work above your head, then I would seriously consider a product that is as close to "drop in" as possible, such as that radio from Sloan Express. I opted to go the difficult way as I wanted to tackle it one particular weekend. I installed a Kenwood stereo systems in my 4640. This also necessitated replacing the speakers, too, as the speakers were bad, too. Cost me about $200 for the in dash radio/CD player and speakers. It took some time to make sense of what I had to work with in the wiring. I had to fish wires for speakers through the three holes I had in the header panel. I also had to make some shims to move the speakers further out from the headliner, as the magnets were sizable enough so that the speakers would not fit into their places in the headliner. Lastly, I had to use a table saw and dremel tool to carve out adequate space in the radio mount to fit the new in-dash system in and secure it. Is it perfect? No. Did I learn some lessons? Yes. Would I do it again, exactly the way that I did. I am not sure if I would or not. Perhaps after using a kit from Sloan Express, I would have a different opinion. I do know the speakers in the factory installation might be difficult to find replacements, as those speakers are some different than what I could find in an audio store where I purchased all of this.

Thanks for all the help. I found that THE COMPANY in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa carries REI products. I got a radio with weather band, adapter harness and panel to make it fit right for $175.
