70 jd power steering pump

Im rebuilding my pump the new seals came with a washer, does it go between the seals and does both seals install the same direction? JD dealer didnt know must be to old

It doesn't need it, but if you can fit it in there it's up to you. For the seals, you need to point the inside seal lips toward the center of the pump (pressure). Outside seal lips point towards air (no pressure). The original seals were double lipped like this. If you don't have the I&T manual or John Deere SM2050 power steering manual you should buy them as they will help. Also a lot of good information here in previous posts. The shaft must be in good condition (no grooves or wear) or the seals will not hold up and you will do the job again. The last time I bought a new shaft from JD it was $200, but some aftermarket places in Two Cylinder or Green magazine have them for less. I use a very thin layer of HondaBond sealant between the pump sections.
