John Deere LA Tractor

Hello, I am hoping that someone here can give me a little bit of help.

I have what I believe to be a John Deere Model LA Tractor, made in I think 1946 (based off of the serial number of 118XX). My father has had it for years and used it to turn the garden over every spring and mostly just kept it up because we had it and we arent the sort to just let it rust.

Then three years ago my father got cancer and it literally just sat in the barn. It has been covered, out of the elements, but I am sure if we drained the gas, put a new fuel filter and battery on, it would start and go. Its not rusting, the tires are good. It was used as a tractor though, so the plow tines (sorry if that isnt the right term, but its better than the "ground sticker thingies" my mother uses) would need to be repainted as they were just hosed off and let dry. And I remember twice in the last fifteen years that it got taken to the JD dealership for a going over and everything checked out.

That said, my mother would like to sell it. Its big, She doesnt need it, and rather than set it out in the pasture to rust, we would rather it see some use. Unfortunatly, I dont know if its worth $500 or $5,000. I have tried looking on the net, but I havent really gotten a good idea.

There are a few guys who have expressed interest in purchasing it, and she would like to get it out of the barn, but I dont want her to get hosed on the deal. By the same token, I dont want to put off a good buyer by asking way too much. If I had a rough idea of what it was worth, it would help give me somewhere to go with.

Can anyone help? Thank you in advance.

Without seeing it makes it tougher as many of those are missing some of the sheet metal parts.
But a complete one, running with an implement or 2 if in good shape $ 4,000 to 5,000 should not be out of line for a high starting point. I have seen some sell in that area in the past. Not sure how much the economy has hurt them.

Is it hand crank start, when was the last repaint done? Engine compression test?
Are the guys that are asking about it old friends of the family? I would think that there would be some value in selling it to a family friend, and you would be able to visit the tractor from time to time. You may want to ask the guys that are interested in it what They think it is worth to them. Anything over $2 or 3k would be a reasonable offer to me.
Can you post a picture of it.

Looking at it, and looking at a lot of pictures I have found on the net, I dont believe it is missing anything. I believe it has two implements, plow and cultivator.

Thank you very much for the rough estimate. I would just like to get as much for her as I can, while still being fair.

I found a picture I have from when I was looking for info on it. This is before I went up there and washed it and aired up the tires and all that.

To answer a further question, it is not crank start, it is electric start. It ran as of 3 years ago, and I have paperwork from John Deere doing a full tuneup, cleaning, and check of everything from about 5-6 years ago.

Where are you located? What State?

I will give you $2,500 for it right now, if you can drive it off a trailer when you deliver it.

Mike, Find attached are pictures of my 1946 LA. Before and after restore. I gave just under $3,000.00 for it two years ago with out the plow. In looking at the picture of yours I would think the something between 4 and 5 thousand is not out of line.

I am not an LA expert, but that looks pretty complete and like it has been well cared for. I think the higher numbers mentioned would be a starting point. It is much easier to come down that go up in price. You can list for free on this site. Be sure to use a good photo in the "Photo Ads".
