steering column on 60 john deere

Any help is appreciated. I'm trying to remove the steering column from a 60 john Deere and not having any luck. Can anybody give me any pointers on how it is properly removed? Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about the steering shaft, the front pedestal,, or the transmission cover/dash assembly that supports the rear of the steering shaft? Mike

The shaft that goes from steering wheel to manual gear box on front of tractor. I have to remove it to get fuel tank off. That is what I'm actually working on so I can clean it out.

Remove the steering wheel, front grill/nosecone. There will be a cover at the top/front of the front pedestal directly in line with the steering shaft held in place with 2 1/2" bolts. Remove the cover (bearing cap) and screw the steering shaft out the front. When re-installing be aware that the endplay of the steering shaft is controlled by the thickness of the shims/gaskets on the front bearing cap. Mike
