John deere r pto

My 1949 John deere r pto won't disengage. What could be causing this? Is it a job to fix?

Might want to try disconnecting the linkage at the fork lever and try moving that lever to see if it'll engage. Just thinking maybe your lever is frozen to the pivot shaft? Or not adjusted right?

Thanks I tried that and it still won't. Which way is it disengaged up or down?

They are quite stiff, pull back to disengage. With engine off & pto disengaged, if you can rotate the shaft, the brake is either in need of adjustment or repair. If it actually will not disengage at the lever, the clutch could be set up too tight you need a manual to adjust it & see. If its disengaging but just wont stop, its the brake. The oil keeps it turning with quite alot of force.

pull on the lever to didengage it. had to put a block of wood between the tractor and lever to hold it from turning.

I tried what you said. It won"t spin with the tractor off the clutch must be set to tight. I will have to find a manual and try to adjust it. Thanks.
