70 wheel hubs

one of my hubs that holds the center hub to the axle on my 70 has come loose around the axle. i took it apart, cleaned everything and put it back together but it"s still loose. i did not notice any rust or build up next to the wheel hub that would not allow it to pull up tight, so wonder if those wedges every wear out???
thanks
Gary

Are you talking about the round thing that bolts to the end of the axle to hold the hub on... That has a taper on it that is supposed to run home in the hub?

If so... As the splines and hub wear the hub is able to go onto the axle further. The hub retainer hickey can be faced off some and bored a little deeper so it'll come home in the hub countersink. It'll buy you some more life out of your hub.

Yes wedges can wear enough not to tighten again correctly on the axle if allowed to operate loose . Are you positive no foreign material is on axle or wedge or in the cast wheel opening??

not 100% positive nothing is on there as my son took it apart when i was not there. i asked him and he said there was nothing, but i need to take it apart again and check. it seems super loose to me. in fact you can rock the wheel and almost get the tire to move in one notch.
