1928 D starting question

Okay, this is a continuation of a previous post I made a month or two ago.

I have this D. I pulled started it and got it running. I had to do this to get everything tuned up.

I can"t get it to start by hand. I am getting spark on both plugs and the timing mark aligns (mag snaps when lines are aligned). It seems to kick over (trys to start), but just won"t keep going. I don"t know if one cylinder is firing only or if both are firing (reason for not continuing the rotation?), but just does not keep turning. Fuel sprays out of the petcocks.

Someone said I should rebuild the mag, but it is snapping as it should and giving spark to both plugs.

Any advice?

I will put my $ on weak spark. Send the mag to Branson Enterprise, ask for it as hot as possible & you'll love it. One crank starts at 20 below . It'll put you on the ground if you hold a plug. 2 yr warranty even.

Thanks for the advice. I just tried calling them, but I got a recording saying thier number had been temporarily disconnected.

Lots of magneto places sell "hot" mags with only a h.v. coil. Yhe key is better magnets. So if you do it, ask if they use better magnets. One yhing to check first is if theres any slop in the magneto shaft/bushings. That screws up the dwell on the points & can make for hard starts but still run fair if pulled.

I agree with the mag needing a rebuild. Weak impulse. It may seem like it is snapping good but prolly could be better.

Sounds like a plan. Branson Enterprises' phone is not working. If I can't get through to them I'll look locally.

Hey guy s
Just finished a1927 corn borer D and was having same problem. Put Avation gas in it and it seemed to help a lot . Just a thought? Cheap fix if it works.
THANKS

How difficult is it to rebuild a mag? I am very handly with the mechanical stuff, but I never rebuilt a mag.

I've been reading and searching. Would it be worthwhile for me order the mag parts and just rebuild it myself? Or is there more to it than just replacing the parts?

If I order parts, any good places to get a mag rebuild kit?

Bob

Agree on looking into doing or having a mag rebuild done. Where are you positioning your throttle? I have had some hand start tractors that like a "certain" throttle setting before they would crank as well.

I rebuilt my mag on a b we are re-doing currently.. I had 50-100 in parts and a night at the shop doing it.. Just make sure it"s cleaned really good.. I had good results I would do another before I sent one out.. If u put new parts in and still aren"t happy throw the old one back in it an send it out..

I was talking with Robert at Branson Enterprises and he recommended I replace the cap, points, condensor, and rotor. He said these Wico C mags usually don"t have many problems with the coil or magnets. So I am going to try that first. I did the 1/4" test on the spark and I am getting a blueish/whitish/yellowish spark, if that make sense, so he thinks the mag fairly good and maybe a spark jumping on the cap.

Yeah, I've had some As and Bs that were touchy. You have to find that sweet spot that the tractor likes. I just haven't found it yet on this D.
