planting corn as done in 1930-40s

My club is planting a corn plot as done in the mid 1930s using hill drop format. I have my John Deere 290 set up for 40" rows and currently dropping 4 seeds per hill at 29" hill spacing? I plan to "time" the drop at the start of each run to simulate "check row planting" as I don't have the checking equipment.

This would give me a population of 22500 seeds per acre. What pop was typical of the era?

How about the hill spacing? I think 38" would be better but is not easily achievable as the seed is small and I get two per cell.

Our show is at the first of August so we are using short day sweet corn and are ready to desiccate it if needed to be able to harvest during the show with a vintage corn binder.

sounds a thick to me, here we check plant forour show, we try for 2 seeds per hill, much more and it gets to thick, and we plant at 40 inches both ways to get the right spacing to do our cultivating both ways, got some pictures on the internet, rod
