oil filter O-ring JD A

Any tricks on the o-ring when changing the filter. 1940 A, square o-ring on top of a flat cup. O-ring goes into the groove at the bottom of the filter housing. As the cap twists on the ring sits on it and never seems to go into the groove.
I"ve had this tractor for about 10 years, use it enough to change the oil twice a year. Seems like every time I do it, the filter housing leaks and I mess with that O-ring a few times until it all sits just right.
Any tricks???
 
I know it sounds dumb but did you get the old one out? I had one that I used for years and changed the oil several times and didn"t realize that there was a old o-ring in there. always took one out, but then one just the last time i changed it it leaked and i had my uncle look at it and there was an old o-ring in it... you couldn"t even tell it was there. I would try digging around in the grove with a screw driver to make sure its clean
 
I know what you mean, have never had that problem on this tractor. Did it once on a minivan though.
I even take a screwdriver and rag and clean out the groove really well.
The groove is flat at the bottom and V-shaped on the sides. The o-ring that comes with the filter is square. Just doesn't ever seem to set in the groove in a way that it will resist gravity long enough to screw on the cap. If it sets on the cap it slides sideways as you screw the cap.
I tried the dab of grease things once and it didn't help any, just made the 0-ring harder to hold on to for the second try.
 
I had the same problem once and it ended up being that previous owner had two gaskets stuck in the grove. I took a small pick and cleaned the groove out and it went together as it should then. Dave
 
It sounds like there is an old packing stuck in the groove yet. The groove should be square and deep enough that the new ring will fit completely into it. Should not be a balancing act to install.
 
I agree.It does sound like old one is still in there as that groove is to be flat in the bottom. I've had to take a sharpened screwdrive and use as a chisel to get the old ones out.
I always install a new packing whenever I change the filters.
 
To add what the others mentioned, the cap on the oil filter should not spin once it makes contact with the packing. The center "bolt" should turn inside the cap but not the whole assembly. If it does, remove it, clean it and reinstall. The center needs to be able to turn without difficulty. Mike
 
There are 2 different size (O) rings, one for JD 620s and up and 1 for below,such as A,s & ,B,s . The larger one will never fit. Make sure You have the smaller one. Make sure (O) ring race way is down to STEEL.*CHECK*, no old rubber. Now stretch new (O)ring and push up in the grove. Now carefully take 2 narrow screw drivers, one gently held against the rubber and TRACE around on the rubber with the other and the SQUARE rubber will gradually FLIP over CORRECTLY as you work around the (O) ring. Works every time, no hassle.You will never place it correctly with your HANDS. such
 
Guys the correct team for gasket type ring is sq. packing it is not an o,ring it is the same size for all the two cyls. made in waterlou but does not fit the model h the larger packing that comes in some will fit filters is for the 3010 thru 4020 models deere does not put packing in the box with filter
 
Got a chance to mess with it again tonight. Sure enough there was on old ring in it. Had been so hardened and worn that it had formed to the groove.

The nut on the bottom of the cap spins just fine, but right before it would grab on the new ring it would turn a 1/4 turn.

I know many of you will cringe, but I went with the advice that said to leave the old one in. Isn't leaking and I can get back to work.
As for the size of rings, it did come with 2 I threw out the larger one right away.


I should go to my cabinet in the shop and dig out the manual for it, but what is the rec. interval for oil changes. I've been going on 200 hours (estimate, obviously no hour meter).
