How much Paint? Question for all you painters

I will be on spring break next week and would like to finish up some projects and make some more space in the garage. I have a 1945 John Deere B,1 1948 G pulling tractor, and my sons 4020 pedal tractor I would like to paint. My question is how much paint and primer do you think all three will take? I will be using all NAPA supplies. Any suggestions would be helpful.

napa primer and thineer is ok but go to john deere and get your paint thay hav ethe classic green for older tractors use hardner and takes more paint than u think i would go with a good gallon or maybe get a extra quart and dont thin it anymore tahn u need to u can use more thiner and more air pressure in last coupel coats

When I painted my 44 A. I used two quarts primer, two quarts paint. I didn't use any thinner. Fill spray can about three quarter paint, rest with hardener. Stir well. Spray. Lays down like glass. Conventional gun.

Agree...
Gallon from Deere and hardener. The Deere paint really doesn't require primer under it. Says on the can it can be used on bare metal. But if you have a lot of bare metal I'd still prime first.

I do not think you can do them all on a gallon. Do use hardener, but get a breathing air system, that is cheap insurance for your lungs.

I would figure 1 1/2 gallons of geen for each tractor if you are going to take the hood off and paint all the hidden areas that should be done. It will take a gallon of yellow for each tractor. Be sure to use primer under the yellow, it doesn't cover very well.

I would buy 3 gal of the green and 1 of yellow. Paint the big iron first , that way if you are ultra efficient you may have enough left for the small guy. You will always have something to paint JD green , so doesn't hurt to have a little around , also for touch-up or weights on the puller.

On my unstyled A i bought a gallon of green and that wasnt enough.I had to go get some more. Its going to take around a gallon and a half for each tractor. My wheels took 2 quarts of yellow. The yellow is thin so dont get in a hurry. It will take serval light passes.I ended up using no thinner with the yellow because it was so thin.

John Deere paint really is fine for old tractors and alot cheaper. I use double hardener on the frame and triple on the sheet metal. It turns out so nice some people don't believe it's deere paint! Another thing is deere paint likes to be sprayed thick so don't be bashful.

If it was me here's what I would use, this is only a general guide, everyone is differant. It's mainly just from what I can recall from tractors I've painted in the past.

G: 1 gallon of primer, 2.5 gallons of green, 3 quarts yellow, 7 hardener

B: 2 quarts primer, 1.5 gallons of green, 2 quarts yellow, 5 hardener

With this you should have enough to do the 4020 in between.
