1970 John deere 4000

Yes, I'm in the market for an used engine for my John Deere tractor 4000 model 2wd Diesel engine serial #260211r,im in the state of Utah, my number is 801-824-0830, if anybody out there can help me out, I need this as soon as possible,it doesn't matter where it is,

Hi Thank you and yes I have tried them, they do have one but is out of a combine and so the frame bolts/holds may not match...

Your tractor is actually a late 1971 and I assume it has the higher manifold on the starter side, longer shifter, and probably dimmer switch on deck. They also sell a little better than the 69/70.Getting to your question on a motor, a combine motor might be your best option and Tim S. can answer that correctly.I think I know but want to be correct.Just place an ad in classified on this forum might do it but make sure you get a good one that will fit.

it needs a conecting rod, camshaft, 3 piston, 2 rod bearings, 1 main bearing , 2 lifters, and since i got it open i want to do all the gaskets and front and real seal and oil pump, lost of work

Rebuild the engine you have- by the time you find a motor and dink around getting it put in the tractor, you could of already had the orginal motor rebuilt. Yes its probably going to be more $$$ but probably only 1/3 more and you'll have a brand new ready to go motor instead of a 75% wore out combine motor cobled into your 4000, which you've now reduced its resale on.

Amen if a combine engine is installed it will reduce the value of a highly sought after model.

Thank you everybody for the all the help, and yes Jim you are right about that, and that is what we are going to do (me and my borther) I have found a re-built kit + everything else that I would need and is going to be a lot chipper.

again THANK YOU GUYS!!!!

That is the correct decision as there were only about 8000+ made.A real nice 6000 hr. 72 sold in a consignment sale Sat for $15500 and last year a 72 powershift brought $35K.Combine motors are fine but not in a collector tractor.I think the late 105 combine motor might have been real close.

keep the orgial engine in it, we had a 1971 and sold past year for $19,000 diesel synrco ours was 1971 also.
