In frame vs total rebuild

Looking into rebuilding a 404. What is anyone's thoughts on doing an frame verses a total overhaul. Compression and oil consumption is my only problem. 7000 hours on tractor.

We are in process of out-of-frame overhaul on a 404 with 7500 hours. The crank, crank bearings and cam bearings were spotless. It had the same symptoms as yours, with worn valves and 2 cracked pistons. I would pull the head and pistons, if the bearings look good, then do an in-frame.

I prefer out of frame repair, especially if tour going to change the camshaft, and you should consider that too..plus the front and rear main seals..

The camshaft was pristine on this one, except oil drive gear was really worn. I would agree it is easier to fix, if you can handle the weight of the engine.

I had an LP needing as your engine needs. I popped a cap on a main and there was little indication of wear. Been told that gas burns up the top end and diesels the bottom end. In my case it was true to form.

That and limited resources including funds, I did an inframe. Didn't regret it.
