4010 diesel starter

I recently had the starter stay stuck engaged on tractor 24v starter and burned it up. took to electric shop they rebuilt it and replaced the bendix. This was not a cheap repair bill we all know.I installed it last summer no issues they again one day it stuck again but got the battery unhooked before it ran to long.Well we then parked the tractor to overhaul engine putting everything back to start tractor the other day and hooking up the second battery the starter engaged with out pushing button battery terminal arched and battery exploded. I tried another starter and it wants to do the same thing why is this happening????? where is my issue here please help.

Do the conversion. Before you do it, it will seem expensive. After you convert it, you will ask yourself why didn"t I do this a long time ago.

Have you checked to see if you have some melted or shorted wires, that are causing the solenoid to engage? Try unhooking the wire to the solenoid from the starting switch at the solenoid and check if it a has power when it's not supposed to.

You have a short someplace in the wiring? Look at the harness routing for someplace it has rubbed bare.

As others have said, convert to 12 volt and never look back. Sounds like the wiring harness has a bad spot somewhere that is shorting it out.

Thank you all for the great replies I will inspect the wire harness and convert it over to 12v.any suggestions where to get a kit???

You don't necessarily need a "kit" just a 12 V starter that will fit a 4010 and a Delco alternator. A gear drive starter can be bought for a little over $300. Then be sure and attach the blue & brown wires in schematic to the top post on the solenoid with the 12V batteries hooked in parallel.

I buy the components from my local rebuilder and make what I need for wiring and cables. Cheaper than any of the kits I have seen. Starter, start relay, alternator, and alternator pulley are the parts needed. I modify the alternator bracket and use a single pulley. If you get the right double pulley you can use the bracket without modification. I make my own battery cables but you can buy ready made just measure the length you need. If you know what you are doing you can make the wiring harness for a fraction of the cost of a ready made one.

I bought my starter from Deere and fabricated the mounting brackets. The wiring changes are super simple. I would go with a 3 wire alternator and hook up the charging light.

The guys on here should be able to help you with the starter model.

Went thru the same thing on my 4010 last year. With advice and help from the guys on this forum, I converted mine over to 12 volt. I have some tips and some pics that might help you out when you get ready to do your conversion if you are interested. My email is [email protected]

Take your generater bracket and turn it upside down and grind the front corner some and it works great for an alt. bracket.Get a long bolt and cut a piece of pipe for a spacer.I have changed all of my 4010,4020 and 3020's to 12 volt.I used a Delco alt. and made new wiring harness as the old ones were brittle,Deere used alot of wires that you do not need.Warning your fuel guage may or may not work when finished. It depends on the serial number of your tractor which guage and sending unit it has.

I have a 1966 model 4020 that I need to convert to 12V. Where do I get a Denso starter and a delco 3 wire alternator from? I have been looking at the kit Abiline Machine sells for $500, but if there are better parts to be used, I'd like to use them even if I have to piece a kit together myself.

Google Denso heavy duty and their website will come up and it will give you the part number you need and will locate vendors for them. I got my Denso from Deere. Where ever you get the Delco alternator make sure you get the pulley. It doesn't come with them automatically and Deere likes their pulleys a lot. The Denso 4.0kw starter will run 350 to 400$ or so. Don't think I have ever found them cheaper. Iskra makes a 4.0kw that fits 402s that TimS likes and they are less than 300$ if I recall from some vendors. Months or so ago I posted a thread asking Tim to confirm the Iskra part # I found was the right one. You should be able to find it sorting backing a handfuls of pages. I am not at home so I don't have access to all my stuff.

This the website for the Denso starter. If you use their look up it lists the 4020 as 1980s for the years but it is the right one.

The part # direct from Deere is SE501403 and is a little over 400$

This is the Iskra starter TimS recomends. It is less than 300$

Iskra P/N IS0663 Voltage 12 V Power 4.0 kW

I know there is a 4 and 5 kw Delco starter but I can't guarantee they fit the 4010/4020 due to the intake manifold.
