Red Gas Caps

John Deere may have painted the fuel caps red but I own these tractors now not Deere &Co. I hate the red caps so mine are black correct or not. Just because Deere does something doesn t mean you have to. Besides everything Deere does is not necessarily correct.

Your right to each their own,,I like them Red,,I was never sure what color they were out of the factory..

I am not sure when Deere first painted the gasoline tank caps on all-fuel tractors red but they were for many years. As far as anyone can tell, for a gasoline-only tractor the red caps first appeared either on a late numbered series tractor (possibly with the front fill fuel tank) or the 20 series tractors. They were green before that. That's the best information I have. Mike

I posted this related subject before. As I recall my current radiator cap was black, surely wasn't red or I wouldn't have gone trough the following:

Went to the dealer for a new cap. The guy put it on the counter while doing the PW. While waiting I opened the box and saw a RED cap.

I said that I wasn't putting a red cap on my green tractor. He said that I would if I wanted one from him.

I bought it and in getting home pulled out my IT manual and lo and behold there on the front glossy cover was the picture of a 3020 in pristeen new condition supporting it's red fuel cap.

Apparently JD put them on the tractors to distinguish fuel from radiator fluid. With the fuel tank preceeding the radiator, being contrary to most radiators being at the front of the equipment, on the thousand series at least, apparently they had a problem with guys putting the wrong fluid in the tanks. Seems like a great idea in retrospect.

Keeping the radiator/fuel tank from getting mixed up by using a Red cap is a good line of thought,,and making them more visible when you lay them down to re-fuel is another..
