John Deere B stuck engine?

I parked my model B in the barn a couple years ago. It has electric start. I took out the battery when I parked it. Today I took off the sheet metal guard around the big cast iron wheel that the starter turns and tried to turn it by hand. I could not get it to budge. Did the engine lock up or is there some trick I dont know? If it is locked up does anybody know of an easy way to break it free? I dont understand why it would lock up, the barn is pretty dry. Thanks, Lou

Same thing happened to our 43B.

Take the spark plugs out and put penetrate in the cylinders.

Run a chain through the holes in the flywheel.

Use a "cheater" pipe to apply pressure in both directions on the flywheel.

Hope this helps.

You can jack up the rear wheel, put tractor in low gear and engage the clutch. Put a mark on the flywheel and rock the rear wheel back and forth gently. Check mark on flywheel to see if it moved. Shouldn't be stuck too tight in that short of time unless condensation laid in the cylinders.

I use the word [b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]penetrate[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0] as a very broad term to include everyone"s favorite concoction.

I use a 50/50 mix of acetone and automatic transmission fluid which seems to work pretty good.

I unstuck an A once by filling both cylinders with diesel hooking a high lift jack through one of the holes in the flywhee and jacking up the tractor until the tire came off the ground. I expected it to take a while for it to break loose but an hour or so later while I was cleaning up some parts the tractor gave out a groan and it lowerd itself down. A little back and fourth on the flywheel and it was all freed up.

I just unstuck a stuck 1928 John Deere D. I did it the way everyone is suggesting: fluid in cylinder and used the flywheel with crowbar in the holes. My holes were in the 12o'clock and 6o'clock position. I pulled my other tractor up to the front of the D and used a come along between the two. It broke free the second day after being stuck for 3 or so years.
