'39 H cam gear loose

I have opened up my '39 H and found the Camshaft drive gear which mates with the crankshaft is loose. The bearing nut is tight and bearing appears to be in good shape. The gear will slide 1/4" on the cam splines and twist a few degrees. What keeps the gear tight?

This tractor was used very little since a rebuild in the 60s. I am taking it apart due to 2 balls which came out in an oil change. Can't find out where they came from. Crank, cam, governor, and fan drive bearings all look good. Any other place they may have come from? (aside from left in during the rebuild)

Thanks

That gear should be on a tapered spline. IIRC

The nut may be bottoming out before it pushes the gear back enough to tighten. You may be able to make a washer to put in there to tighten it up. It could also end up being worn bad enough alignment is thrown off and good used parts may be in order.
