1972 4020's

I have been told that in 1972 they built the powershifts first (half the year) and the syncro"s were made last. Any truth this? Are there any high SN powershifts? Just curious.

The PS tractors were mixed in nearly all the way to the very end. An article in Two-Cylinder magazine gives the last diesel row crop PS serial number as 270147. The last 4020 was 270288 so PS made it until about 150 tractors from the end.

Funny they know the first and last one but there is no way to tell how many are in between. Some say over 20%.I understand there was no set order when a syngro or powershift went thru the assembly line. You just dont see many side counsel tractors equipted with powershift. They are highly sought after[if nice] and I only get about 4%w/ P.S.I think several went south and did not survive.

As I stated on an earlier thread I think options such as trans type were determined by JD dealer orders IE dealer specified which trans either the customer wanted or dealer wanted for stock.

For the work we do with the 4020, a powershift or side console machine just seems like it would be really not handy. I didn't think the 3 pt on the dash would be worth anything til I started moving round bales with it.

I actually think the side console is easier for hay bales (have both) and power shift is really the berries--- grampa's 4430 and other grampa's 4020 had them... our 4020 and 3020 dont...

mowing hay with the 3020 and 9ft mower there are times I wish I had ps as I could speed up in light mowing and downshift in heavy or dangerous conditions all with out stopping and changing ranges.
