Wico XB dist. condenser check

I have two Wico X6874 condensers. Can I check them on an ohm meter? I get 0 ohms from terminal to case. Seems that should make them good... one is an old brass cased condenser I pulled from a junked unit. The other is steel and was in the drawer at the shop.I remember an old post on the subject but cannot find it.

I wouldnt recommend putting a lot of money in an XB distributor. Get a Wico mag or Delco dist. You will be way better off in the long run. The XB's were not known for being all that great

A simple ohm meter test can show if a Condensor is definitely BAD but it cant tell you if its GOOD, that takes a condensor tester that can show a capacitors value and perform a leak test.

Of course to steady state DC a Capacitor is an OPEN circuit once charged up and if it shows a dead short its BAD.

I can use my old trusty reliable Analog Simpson 260 to perform a kickback test which shows its charging characteristics and the open and short test which is a decent preliminary check although still NOT a true condensor tester

Similar a low voltage ohm meter test can tell if a coil is BAD but not if its good

Well, my dad bought this B new, the year I was born and has done some kind of work almost every year since. Totally original and in her work clothes, she's always had this XB on her and always will. It has a 6 volt battery that just will turn it over when it's cold but she always cranks on the second or third revolution. Just have these 2 condensors and wondered if they could be checked. Have an extra XB with new parts but bad condensor. Guess I'll just try 'em. Thanks.

When I restore an XB I try to make sure the bore where the condenser is clean, also the wave washer that goes in before the condenser, and the clip and screw that hold the condenser are in place.
Condenser doesn't work right if it isn't grounded right.
I still have the 1950 JD B that dad bought new, and it served faithfully for many years with an XB.
I put a Delco on it because I went to 12volt and wanted to use a 40K coil.
