Finally got back to the 4010 I was tring to get cranked back up . I put a new fuel pump and a new fuel filter bled all the air out of the system still no go. I got a buddy over to help me pull start it . It started within ten foot . Ran it around for awhile seemed good and strong running. We killed it and I thought I would put a battery back on it and see what it would do. It would not crank back up ,turns over plenty fast tried a little starting fluid and nothing. I called my buddy back and we pulled it again same thing within ten foot busted right off. What would cause this?

I even put 24 volt to the starter that should turn it fast enough
. I have not checked the timing what is the best way to do
that?

A worn out engine with no compression to speak of will have each and every symptom you are reporting. Even though you think it sounds like a strong running engine, the numbers won't support your opinion if it is actually worn out.

A compression test is in order at this point, just to be certain exactly which hole you are throwing your money down. It's one thing to buy a filter and find that it was wasted money, but just for an example, paying for an injection pump overhaul for this worn out engine won't be so easy to swallow when it makes no difference at all. Been there, done that, and bought the Tee shirt.

The old coot I was working for could not be steered away from that worn out engine and wound up paying for all that and much much more. A lesson learned the hard way, he never had me overhaul another one for him. I can only hope you are listening better than he did....

Remove timing windows on clutch housing & inj pump. Turn engine with a large screwdriver or bar in the direction it runs until timing marks on flywheel appear in slot. 4010's time at 14 degrees BTDC IIRC

I would agree, do a compression test before anything else.

The battery MUST be good for test and starting.

Have you had the injectors out? Make sure that there is those round washers under the injectors to seat them. (They look alot like a 5/16" flat washer)I took a 4010 apart once and seen the previous owner must have either forgot to replace them, or just took them out for whatever reason. They must be in there or you will lose alot of compression. I think they are brass.
