I have a JD 4430 that will run fine for a couple hours then shuts down for a couple days ,then fires back up. Any suggestions

Thanks a bunch

How long since fuel filters were changed? Also check screen(parts key #13) in lift pump. Have you checked for good flow from the tank and that tank vent is unplugged?

Thanks Jim

After it shuts down, it wont crank, complete power loss for a couple days. I dont believe its a fuel problem however with all the relays and interlockings, I just dont know. Sounds like electricial, relay or a themro=coupling opening up..If it has one that is.
Thanks for your input.

Jim

Nothing electrical on a 4430 that will keep it from running once engine is started. You can remove batteries after engine is started and engine will run until fuel tank is empty.

Need more info to diagnose problem.

Hi TxJim
Filter is new, tank was drained fuel replaced with good flow. When the enging shuts dowm, it will not crank. Thats why i thought electricial problem. Any additional thing i need to look for?

thanks jim

You have at least "2" problems going on, 1 is why is it shutting down, nothing electrical will shut a 4430 down, my guess is a fuel problem. 2 Why won't it crank the engine on a re-start,possible bad safety switch circuit, safety switch it's self, starter relay on fire wall failing, starter it's self failing, or battery/connections. You will need to work through these possibility's one at a time to prove and eliminate them till you get to the "one" that is causing each of your 2 problems. To eliminate the safety circuit jump the top starter terminal to the rear small terminal, and "be sure it is in Park first",if nothing happens see if you have any battery power to the starter, a Hillbilly way of checking this is shorting a large screw driver from the top terminal of the starter to the engine block, Be careful again if it has any power it will be like a welder arcing,,if nothing yet prove you battery and connections. When you are on top of the re-start issue and it will not start with the motor turning strong, Then see if you have fuel at the injection pump inlet.

To add to what Tim stated there's a starter relay on firewall under the hood similar to one in the photo(depending on tractor SN) that could be the electrical problem. They've been know to loose their ground or battery connection. On the fuel part of problem you need to check that you have "good fuel flow" from tank to inj pump.

Hello Tim & Jim,
We got the tractor running, found a loose fuse knocking power to the fuel pump sellinoid. Ran it for over an hour, then turned the key off and tried to refire, nothing happened. Refired it the hillbilly way. Would a relay getting heated up or going bad cause this problem. After the tractor sits an hour or so, it starts like a new one.
Thanks again for yalls input.

It's not normal for a 4430 to have an electric shut off,,,they were all cable pull,,I'm wondering what you have going on there????,,maybe a Murphy shut down system is on it ??? Just kinda curious about it...

I agree with you Tim. I'd like to see a photo of the electric fuel control on a 4430.

Hey again Jim & Tim

I bought this tractor used and apparently the previous owner/s have used other models parts thru the years. This is actually a 4400 instead of a 4430. Sorry for the confusion, Does this better explain the way this things acting and and possible solutition.
Thanks again.

Ooh my yes,,a "BIG" difference...We were all scratching our heads trying to figure out what you had going on there. The fuel shut off solenoid is a trouble spot for a 4400 they get oil on the back side of the shut off plunger and causes problems like you have...you will need to change out the shut off solenoid..

Oh yes as you have a CUT with a 100 cid engine @ 29 pto hp instead of a tractor with a 404 cid engine with 125 pto hp. You are correct your tractors fuel is controlled by an elect solenoid.
