We recently picked up a 65 4020 Deseil powershift, for the price of the new tires on the back. Its pretty much loaded with options for 65. The motor was blowing oil by the rings so the previous owner took it the the local Deseil tech school and they tore the motor down, they found some hair line cracks in the block between the sleeve holes. The previous owner didn't have the funds to continue so they boxed up the parts and the tractor and parts ended up in his pasture for the winter.

My question is how serious is hair line cracks at the top of the block? Is this normal? And If it needs fixed or replaced what is the best route.

Many people will tell you to get another block and if you have the money that is an ok option. We have a 4020 that is cracked top and bottom between all six liners. When we overhauled it we used a sealer sold by locktite I think it was 505 or 515.We got it at our CaseIH dealer it is red and the lable says flexes with flanges. The head gasket seals on the liners so that will be ok,but put sealer there also_Our 4020 has lasted 20 years and we did pull it down 10 years ago because a bad fuel injecter caused one piston to score. We replaced one sleeve assembly and put it back together.I know of several other 3020's and 4020's that are just fine with the cracked block between the sleeves.

Might be cheaper to find good running low houred motor. There are a couple in classified now.Sometimes it is cheaper to part one out and buy one that is good.It will cost more than you think about every time and then you have to use it up to come out.
