'42 B with governor knock

Got the old B running and it has a bad knock from the governor. Also when a slight load is applied, the engine wants to run away. The tractor sat for about 15 yrs before I got it running. What should I look for when I tear it apart? I have never ran into a problem like this before.

If it has a bad knock in the governor, you better tear it down before it is ran. Sounds like the fly weights are aboot ready to fly loose, and when that happens it isn't very pretty.
And the bearings are wore out. Rebuild is in order.

Its not a BIG job, but it is one that if done incorrectly can cause you many headaches. You may be looking at new fan gears, bearings, weights, weight pins etc. which adds up to BIG $.
There is more than meets the eye to rebuilding one, so you'd better either get a good service manual, find a KNOWLEDGABLE friend, or look for one of the videos that show the ins and outs of rebuilding one. There are a lot of tricks to disassembling one without tearing it up, (or making yourself crazy) and putting it back together properly, with the fan gear backlash properly set, the timing on, and all oil ports properly cleaned.
Whatever you do, don't run it any more until the problem is addressed, or you may do a great deal of damage to the engine.

I got tricked by this once on a B. The oil line that runs up to the governor was being rubbed by the crankshaft and it sounded like a weight or gear problem. When you get it apart, make sure you check that.

I shut it down within a few minutes. I tore it apart last nite, its very rusty inside and the weights are stuck. Looks like a mess!
