I have a cracked flywheel on my '53 all fuel and need to replace. All "new" ones seem to be taperlock style for $800-%900. My splines are fine, will a taperlock work? I'm close to Abilene Machine and can get one there w/o shipping. Does that price seem OK?

I know you didn't ask this but if you have any reservations about or over the taper lock flywheel, I installed one on my 70D back in about 1983 & have not regretted it! Original cracked along one of the bolt holes & started making noise. Mr.Taperlock stopped that noise & I have about 1900 hours on it.

Later.

AF70...in my experience a cracked flywheel is the result of it coming loose and then overtightened in an effort to keep from knocking. Although the splines may look good on the crank they are probably slightly worn and a taperlock is the best way to fix the problem. Putting a used or NOS JD flywheel on a worn crank will not work. You cannot have any radial movement of the FW on the crank (spline/groove width worn) or vertical movement (over diameter of the crank worn). If you go with the taperlock, make sure you follow the installation instructions closely.

IMO the taper lock is the way they should have been built in the first place. Our 70 gas went through two stock flywheels before we put a taper lock on it. Should never have another problem. That was about 8 years ago and I think we paid around $500 for it.

A taperlock will work, but be sure it is for your gas model and not a diesel !!!! I'm betting they are different.

I don't know if that style will work but I found a regular flywheel on ebay they want 285 for and 125 to ship it. but i bet the guy would take less if you offered him.
