John Deere Model M Governor problems

I put in a new clutch did a compete tune up installed a new carburetor , set the timing and it starts but when I give it a little throttle the governor runs wild on me and I shut it down immediately . I had the cover off the gov to fix an oil leak did not disturb anything else. Any ideas? I adjusted the carb but that didn't change anything.

Did you adjust any of the linkages to the carb and governor in taking things apart? I don't have my books with me but it sounds like maybe one of the linkages could be set wrong. Also, did you check the settings on the carb that they are close to factory from the owner manual? Just because it is new or rebuilt doesn't mean it was set properly. The owners manual covers both procedures for setting the governor and throttle linkages and adjusting the carb.
 
Hotflashjr You are right on all points. i had everything torn down. I have a service manual and I will look it up tonight. I really appreciate the advise. Thank You.

I just looked at my MT trying to get a better idea. Any chance that the carb rod and governor rod got put on the wrong arms of the governor? The rod that goes from the carb to the governor should go on the outside arm of the governor if standing in front of the carb/governor. The rod from the throttle lever on top of the engine should go to the inside arm on the governor. Just another thought if everything was rebuilt and and not taken apart too far.
 
hotflash, I haven't been out in the shop yet but thinking about the throttle rods , I noticed that my throttle lever at the steering wheel was sticking straight up when at idle, which was not very good. You may be on to something. I am going out there in the morning and check this out. Thank you again for the information .

Seems to me I once worked on on a 420 that did this for the owner just after he re-built his carb. Sticks in my mind his kit had a new throttle shaft but it had teh lever on the opposite side of the plate from the original! That made it open the throttle when the governor moved to slow it down and closed the throttle when the engine went slower.

Little bugger would wind up like no tomorrow & the switch was all that saved it! If your NEW carb lever works the opposite way on the new carb from the old carb..... That would do it!

ok I solved the problem only to create another one. I checked everything out and then went to my service manual and was looking at the throttle control and governor control pictures and noticed I was missing the top governor control rod spring pt # L 4197 T . Problem solved. However where do I get this spring? I guess I will scour the net. Thanks for all your help.

Check your old carb throttle arm against the new one, most kits that include a new throttle shaft for the carb have the wrong arm and it causes this problem.
