4020 Serial Number code?

I bought what I thought was a 4020 standard but I see it has an "R" at the end of the SN instead of an "S"

Does this means it's a rowcrop?

Thanks

No-

It means its a syncro range.

1965 or later code:

First digit:

1- 3020
2- 4020

Second digit:

1- row crop
2- standard
3- hi crop

Third digit:

1- gas
2- LP (I think)
3 diesel

4th:

R- syncro
P- powershift

two cylinder has a good key for this.

'64s had a different code, similar to the 10 series.

121P = 3020 standard gas powershift
213R = 4020 row crop diesel syrcro

Yeah-

I did that wrong... but the R at the end is still syncro. The other letter you'll find there is P for powershift.

The letter folowing the 213 (or whatever) is a T I believe. Thats the trouble with using just your memory...

T is for 4020
213 is diesel
212 is propane
211 is gas
R after T213 is syncro
P after T213 is powershift
the six digit serial number followed by r the R means it was made at the waterloo factory

Thanks alot for all the help everyone, I really appreciate it.

Dumb question, why would a tractor have a row crop tag but pretty much every single standard option including fenders?

What do you consider every standard option? if it has a adjustable wide front i would say it was a dual purpose tractor for the owner. List the options it has

5020 fenders with a standard platform, it has one dust shield but missing the other one, big rubber centers, adjusable standard front with the correct short knees.

I think I seen this one for sale some where.
Its just dual purpose in my opinion nothing too special

I doubt you have, I bought it private and have not listed it on here.

I agree 100% though, it's nothing special, just a mess. I think I will sell the standard parts off of it and restore it as a row crop.

My 1967 4020 Standard is serial "T223PxxxxxxR. It is a diesel with power shift. A standard 4020 can have a non-adjustable front axle and may or may not have a 3-PT. I have seen them both ways. When no 3-PT, they have a wide swing drawbar.

I guess this is the '69 4020 you asking about before. If so I thought JD stopped selling 'standard' tractors at the start of the side consoles, and only offered row crop.
The only way you could get a 'standard' looking tractor was to pick the 'standard' options. Hence why according to serial numbers there are no 4320 'standards', but there are a few that look like them. (Hope all that makes sense)
I'd say that if the sheet metal all matches and looks original then that is how it came from the factory and should be restored as such. Not too many SC standard power shifts about.

Hi Pete,

The 1969 4020 I asked about the other day is the one I grew up with that we still use today. I grew up being told it was a 71 so thats why I was surprised.

The tractor I am asking about in this thread is something I just bought, it's a 1970 4020 standard.

Thanks alot for the clarification, that makes perfect sense.
