john deere 60

I am redoing a first year 60 that I plan on plowing with and am going to have plenty of questions! I guess I will start with the valves. what is every ones opinion on grinding the valve seats versus having them machined out and putting in hardened steel ones? Next, this one has rotaters on the exhaust valve retainers. I took them apart to see how they looked inside and the balls were wore flat. should I replace them? Is there much difference between them and plain retainers? It also has an after market power steering setup on it. does that effect the value of the tractor? Also, it has the shutter valve. are those worth the hefty price to redo or should i try to convert it to a thermostat? And the RH main bearing housing is behind the gear on the crank, and mine is STUCK on there. any helpful hints to get that gear off? thanks for any replys and I am sure I will be back on with more questions as time goes on!

If it needs a valve job let the machine shop do it. Ask them about the hardened seats. As for the aftermarket power steering. It may degrade the value of tractor but maybe not.
Unsure on the retainers. The bearing must be pulled off. The tractor has a thermo-syphon cooling system. Be need for a thermostat. Mix water and anti-freeze BEFORE dumping it in the radiator. The shutters work very well. That's your thermostat. You open and close them manually by turning the knob on the dash watching the gauge. Operating temp should be up around 180-190*. Good luck.

i beg to differ husker you dont kow much about a 60 frist yes get new seats installed next new rotors are neaded this tractor model does not have a thermo syphon set up it has a water pump from the factory the thermostat is in the bottom of the radator it was suppost to open and close the shutters was ok till get a little dirt and rust then junk best the find thermostate set up fore later model 60 and take the shutters off also there was no control on the dash fot the shutters on the 60

i'm not a big fan of the looks of the aftermarket power steering but if you are planning on using the tractor you may want to leave it on there. my 70 doesnt have power steering and everytime i start to do something with it i wish it did

Stay with the Rotators..they help prevent burned valves..

I doubt you will ever use the 60 hard or long enough to ever see a need for hard seats...

Put a GOOD Gear Puller on that gear, apply plenty pressure, then apply a little Heat and it will slide off..

Ron..

The shutters and 'Sylphon' (thermostat) that came with the '60 can be rebuilt - I have done so, and was lucky to find a NOS Sylphon.

thanks for all of the responses. My next question is, I am changing out the entire transmission/crankcase, for a couple of different reasons. I am going to(I think) use a loader tractor and cribbing to pull the front frame off and then do the same with the tranny. My biggest question is,the PTO shaft has a coupler in it. Will that comeapart when I pull the tranny off? Will it just slide back together? Or will I have to take it apart from the back?
