hey was wondering which of these tractors is better if both similarly equipped and well maintained..looking at a 4450 with 4200 original hours and quad range..seems excellent in every way..also looking at a 4455 with 6500 original hours and powershift..also seems excellent in every way..which would you pick? asking price is 36,000 on the 4450 and 39,500 on the 4455. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Also..looked at a 4250 that is in excellent original condition..has the 15 speed powershift..runs and shifts excellent..the only thing is it has 9900 hours..asking price is 26,000..was impressed with how it started..was 20 degrees when i went and looked at it and it fired right up with no ether or plug in. Thanks in advance...Ernie

This topic was discussed on this forum on Feb. 14 under the heading of Changes/upgrades from 4450 to 4455. Basically 55 series get a little better fuel economy with an updated free flowing cyl head.

thanks Tx Jim,how about a 4250? ho do they compare
to the 4450/55? really like the one im looking at
except it has 9900 hours..but it is well maintained
and really nice and original.

4250's are just as good as the rest of the 50/55 series RC tractors. I have a 4255 with 10,500 hrs that has been a good tractor. I've owned it since '93. I've seen them go 12000-15000 hrs before an overhaul is required. It all depends on the quality of maintenance.

And thanks to everyone who replied to that Feb 14th post. I bought the 4455 over the weekend. It'll be delivered late today. It's a 1990 model, PS, MFWD, excellent rubber (20.8X38 rears) duals, full weights, 3 scv outlets, front fenders, 3939hrs, and dynos (@ dealer) 155hp. Checked out by nearby Deere dealer that I'm familiar with (and trust) I paid $39,000, which isn't cheap, but IS a decent deal when condition is considered. Looking forward to giving my 4440 a rest this spring!

we have a 4250 and a 4255...both are excellent tractors! we bought both used years ago with very low hours and both are approaching 10,000 hours and have yet to do anything major on either..they have been used for a little bit of everything..truly great machines..would take them over newer deeres,no question.

i used to be all red until i took a chance on a deere 4450 years back..needless to say i am all green now! that 4450 has been flawless in the 6,000 hours i have put on it (had 3500 when i bought it)..i have done a water pump and just recently had two of the remotes rebuilt..that is it..pretty hard to beat! deere has not made a better tractor then the 50s or 55s.

the 4455 was a good choice... i'd pick a powershift over a quad any day of the week.

As to the 4250, a JD service manager told me a few years ago that the rear end of some of them, I think those with long axles, is the same as the 4450, while the short axled version is a little lighter. Any truth to this?

4250's have 86 MM axles & 4450'S HAVE 92 MM axles

I think you made a good choice. The 15 speed powershift is a wonderful transmission for all applications and the engine in the 55 series has a lot going for it in terms of cold weather starting, torque, governor response, and fuel usage. There is nothing wrong with the 4450 with the quad range, but the step up to the 55 series, in my opinion, is a much greater refinement in these tractors. I like our quad range in our 40 series, and it is fine for field work. The 8 speed powershift was also nice for on the go shifting over wide speed ranges in our 30 series, but the gaps between the upper range of gears were pretty big. I find our 60 series with the 15 speed powershift a joy to operate with an even better cab as compared to earlier models. The engine is very snappy and quick to respond to varying loads. Nothing wrong with the 40 or 50 series, but there are marked improvements with each newer succession in the line.

The 15 speed is pretty lousy for loader work. If I was buying a deere to put a loader on it I'd pay extra for any of the quad transmissions, especially a powerquad. The full powershift is too slow in reverse, is too far of a reach to shift, and I can never get it into the gear I want from a stop.

My 4255 operators manual shows a 15 speed Powershift will go 5.48 MPH in 4th reverse. How fast do you chose to back up??
