A local dealership has a JD 4000 D SR NF for sale. The August 1996 issue of green magazine states the final drives and axles were smaller or that of a 4010. The question is, with the hp of a 4020 and smaller final drives and axles, my concern would be high wear in this area. Does anyone have any experience or comment on this? Would the 4000 be something to stay away from because of this? Thanks, Paul.

I'm not a deere guy but my neighbor i worked for has had a 4000 with a turbo on it for 30 years about the only thing its ever needed was tires and oil changes. He does use it as a 125 horse tractor on occation too, with a tank on the front and a 3pt side dresser with two tanks on it.It must be a pretty decent machine imo

My dad and I both have 1 His has 14000 hours on it and has had 118 hp since new The engine was overhualed at 11000 hours because it broke a wrist pin. Mine has 9000 hours an hasn't been overhualed They both have been worked for the first 3/4 of there life They have both had the clutch replaced twice. The rear axle and planetaries are unique to the 4000 they are heavier Then 3020 or 4010 The 4000 had a different style wheel they used but the option to change to 4020 style was and is there The end of the axle that the wheel fits on is the same size as the 4010 but from the outer bearing in they are larger . They are a very good tractor and most times they will sell as good or even better than a 4020.

The 4000s are very reliable and the drive train has never been a problem. They are sought after by collectors as there were only 8095 produced from 69/72.There was one original 72 power-shift that recently sold for around 35K.I have seen them with HFWA,powershift 3 scvs, and even factory cabs w/air.They were about $800 cheaper and around 800# lighter but all New Gen seem to bring about the same if nice.
