I'm rescuing an M that has electrical tape strapped around the steering wheel as a poor man's grips. Baked on. What is the best way to get it off? If I can unwind it I will do so, but if not, what options do I have? Thanks! Ben W. in VA OldPathsEquipment.com |

| OK Ken the suff I used was called OUTLAST from Lawson Products (1-800-LAWSON4U)or Drummond a Heavy-Duty Black Rubber coating. It is about 8 dollars from my Lawson salesman. I only used about 1/2 can. This stuff like bubbles/boils when you spray it and it fills in the fine to medium cracks.. It dried completely and is not sticky. A like product (I have not used it) is sold at the big box store as a rubber sealing spray the commercials on TV show a guy spraying a screen door making it water proof. Good Luck |

| I would think that if someone wrapped the wheel in tape it was probably cracked or worn out. |

| | Not aware of your financial resources, but the NH dealer has some nice wheels with center caps and all for what I consider a reasonable price......if you can stand the NH rather than Ford logo on the cap. Grin. Also for the current replicas of the old Ford spoke wheels, Stephens Tractor Parts near Alexandria, LA. has some with molded rims that are better than the original. Mark |

| Well I didn't have much resources available at the time when I had to redo a steering wheel. After I took all the junk off of it I saw that it was very badly cracked and chunks missing. I cleaned the cracks up and got that puddy for rubber or steel repairs and filled them in. Once hard I took off all the rough edges and formed the grips and wheel as it once was. I taped up the steel spokes and got a can of that spray rubber stuff at the Big W store and sprayed the wheel another coat and it is amazing all the fine cracks and uneven areas just evened out and now that steering wheel is as good as new. been using it now for 5 years no cracks and it has good grip. |

| They are indeed near Alexandria, but the actual town is Coushatta, Louisiana, in case someone wants to google it for the number. They are top notch folks. |

| That's ok, Tex, I've seen green tractors painted with cheap paint turn blue. |

| Take a razor knife around the outside of the steering wheel and cut the tape. Peel it off. Careful not to slip. Cuts hurt! |

| | Thanks for the tips. The problem is that the vinyl is sun dried to where it won't peel, just snaps and breaks. This M sat outside for awhile. I was hoping for something that could dissolve the glue but not burn up the steering wheel's rubber. Ben W. |

| WD-40 is a tremendous solvent for that type of stickem, trouble will be that it can't get thru the layers of vinyl to soak the bottom layer good. But with the cut around the circumference done, there might be enough cracks in the old rubber to let enough in there to do a fair job of it. I'd let it soak for at least a day. It shouldn't harm the rubber at all, but could make it messy handling until it dried off. |

| Heat gun like was mentioned. If the glue is a problem after the tape is off, paint-prep or any alcohol based pre-paint cleaner will get the glue with enough soaking and scrubbing. Jim |
