How do you compress them together enough to get the E-clip on?

I use a home made tool like these, the small one on the left is for the rubber e-clips, the larger one on the right is for the spring on the shock made them from steel pipe, cutting an opening into them for access.

I forgot to mention that I use this in the bearing press..but I suppose you could also do it in a vise...
